Although Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is rooted in Brazil, its origins trace back to Japan. The martial art evolved from Japanese Jujutsu and Judo, brought to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka, in the early 20th century. Maeda’s teachings paved the way for the Gracie family to develop what we now know as BJJ—a sport focused on leverage, technique, and ground combat.
